Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said of him, “Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom there is no deceit!” Nathanael said to him, “How do you know me?” Jesus answered him, “Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.” Nathanael answered him, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!” (John 1:47-49 ESV)
Nathan came receptive, but doubtful. He was hopeful, yet skeptical. He wanted to believe but needed convincing. It was a rather simple thing which tipped him over the edge and off the fence. Jesus told him something Jesus had no human way of knowing. Unlike Gideon, Nathanael did not require more miracles. he placed his faith in this Jesus of Nazareth.
What fence am I sitting on? Am I continuing to test my Master as Gideon did, or will I allow myself to believe and follow as Nathanael did?
