I named my son after two people, my father (John) and Jonathan of the Old Testament, Saul’s son.  I wanted honor my father and give my son a name that has great importance to me.  Jonathan, Saul’s son and David’s best friend, defied his own father when it became apparent that Saul was operating counter to God’s will.  I desire for my own son’s commitment to God to supersede my own.  It is my fervent hope that, like Jonathan of old, my son would stand against me should I begin to move counter to God’s will.

It wasn’t until later I learned the actual meaning behind Jonathan’s name.

From the Hebrew name יְהוֹנָתָן (Yehonatan) (contracted to יוֹנָתָן (Yonatan)) meaning “YAHWEH has given”
